Lincoln City Seal Major Contract Agreement: Analysis and Reaction

Lincoln City have secured the future of popular Tom Hamer until the summer of 2029.

The no-nonsense defender has made 40 appearances in all competitions this season and has now committed himself to the club for a further three campaigns. His current contract was due to expire in June 2027.

“This is a no-brainer for us,” sporting director Jez George said “Tom is coming into the prime years of his career; he has performed at a consistently high level all season and his long throw also provides us with an important attacking threat within our game model.

“Tom also fits our profile of what we look for in a ‘Lincoln City player’. He is understated, committed, aggressive and effective and we feel that he can easily be overlooked, underrated and undervalued outside our club but certainly not by our staff, players and fans.

“He has been a massive part of what we have achieved so far this season and Tom has a massive role to play in what we hope to achieve in the future.”

That certainly echoes what a lot of supporters feel, with Hamer often cited as a potential Man of the Match alongside Sonny Bradley. Known for his long throw, there is so much more to his game, and he’s climbed throguh the squad to become a solid fixture at the back.

“I’m really happy to have got everything sorted, as soon as I heard about the possibility of extending my time here, I knew it was something I wanted to do,” Hamer said.

“The staff, players and supporters make this a great club to be at and I’m really pleased to have committed my future here long-term.”

Tom Hamer Career

Hamer came through the academy at Oldham Athletic after joining the club in 2015, making his senior debut in the EFL Trophy in January 2018 against Leicester City U23 before featuring again in the competition against Shrewsbury Town. He made his League One debut later that season after coming on against Oxford United, before earning his first full league start against Rochdale.

In April 2018 he signed his first professional contract with Oldham and, despite a 3-0 defeat to Southend United that same day, was named Man of the Match. He scored his first senior goal shortly afterwards, heading home in a 2-2 draw with Northampton Town on the final day of the season.

In January 2021, he moved to Burton Albion for an undisclosed fee and went on to establish himself at the Pirelli Stadium, although an Achilles tendon injury suffered against Cheltenham Town in April 2024 ruled him out for six months. That summer he joined Lincoln City on a three-year deal and made his debut in an EFL Cup tie against Harrogate Town in August 2024.

His first goal for the Imps arrived two months later when he headed a stoppage-time equaliser against Blackpool. Primarily a right-back, he can also play at centre-back or in defensive midfield and has become known for his long throw-ins, which have created several goals during his career.

Tom Hamer Stats

Tom’s numbers certainly read impressively. His tackle stats rank 88.7th percentile in the division for centre-backs, and his interceptions rank 72.6th percentile. He’s certainly uncompromising and never leaves supporters in doubt about his commitment and application.

Of course, those long throws are a real weapon and have contributed to a number of City goals this season, and unlike players such as Jude Stirling from the past, it isn’t the reason he is picked. He’s 80.6th percentile for blocked shots, 91.9th percentile for clearance, and 96.8th percentile for clean sheets.

It’s not listed below, but he’s 96th percentile for duels won, 96.8th percentile for aerial duels won and 97.6th percentile for touches in the opposition box. They’re unreal stats posted by one of our most consistent players in the current squad.
