Lincoln City Hit With FA Charge

Lincoln City have been hit with an FA charge, as expected, for failing to control our players at the end of last week’s 1-0 win against Exeter City at St James Park.

Tom Hamer gave the Imps the win, but a resolute Exeter did their best to claw their way into a niggly game. Rob Street was caught off the ball in an incident yet to be explained, and a late challenge on Conor McGrandles went unpunished. That was thought to be the catalyst for some ugly scenes at the end of the game, while their reaction to a 1-0 win at our place was also cited.

Kevin McDonald gave them a 1-0 win in the last minute at Sincil Bank earlier in the season, and their celebrations certainly stuck in the minds of City players. When you also consider our towering centre back, Sonny Bradley, is a one-time Plymouth player, the ingredients were all there for a bit of manbags.

That’s what it was, some pushing and shoving, a few players getting heated, some staff trying to calm it down. All something and nothing, and yet exactly the sort of emotion and victimless incident the FA work hard to stamp out.

We have until tomorrow to submit a response, nice and quick of course.

Both clubs played down the issue, claiming they were scenes nobody wanted to see, but inevitably, a fine will now be incoming. Typically, a fine in League One for an incident like this can range from a couple of grand to around £15,000. Burton Albion were fined £12,500 for surrounding a referee, while Birmingham and Cambridge got different fines for a mass confrontation at the end of last season.

Birmingham were fined £20,000, having been guilty of such an incident before, while Cambridge were fined £5,000.

In 2021, we were hit with a fine after a melee between players of Plymouth Argyle and ours, following a 2-2 draw at the Bank. On that occasion, we were fined £2,750 while Argyle were fined £2,500.
