Cardiff captain insists title race is not over
Calum Chambers has insisted Cardiff City have not surrendered hope of winning the League One title, despite seeing us extend our lead and the chasing pack continue to collect points over the weekend.
Cardiff did not play on Good Friday because their meeting with Port Vale was postponed due to Vale’s FA Cup involvement, leaving them to watch events unfold elsewhere. City’s 1-0 win against AFC Wimbledon pushed us 10 points clear at the top, while Bolton, Bradford and Stockport also strengthened their positions below.
Even so, Chambers is not accepting that first place has gone. The former Arsenal and Aston Villa defender pointed to the timing of the international break as a chance for Cardiff to regroup after a run of patchy form before the pause.
“Maybe it came at a good time. It was a reset moment, get together, work hard on the things we want to do.”
“All we can focus on is us. We’ll try to win as many games as we can, then who knows what can happen. Anything can happen in football.”
It is the sort of message you would expect from a captain at this stage of the season, and there is logic behind it as well. Cardiff still have a game in hand, and while the gap to us is significant, their automatic promotion position remains strong. The bigger question is whether they can quickly rediscover the consistency that deserted them before the break.
