A potential £15m fee, a huge Easter Monday showdown at the top, Cardiff’s lingering title belief and a struggling manager’s honest admission about his substitutions have all added fresh intrigue to the League One picture.
With the table tightening in some places and stretching in others, Easter Monday feels significant across the division. At the top, we are on the brink, Cardiff still believe there is life in the title race, and elsewhere clubs are already juggling the longer view, whether that is summer transfer value, Wembley distractions or finding ways to improve after a win.
Leyton Orient eye huge fee for Ballard
Leyton Orient are reportedly ready to demand a fee benchmarked against the £15m paid for Jay Stansfield if they are forced to sell Dom Ballard this summer, after the striker’s outstanding campaign turned him into one of League One’s hottest properties.
Ballard has scored 21 goals in 34 appearances since joining Orient permanently in September 2025, a return which has made him one of the division’s most effective forwards even in a season where Richie Wellens’ side have found themselves looking down rather than up. It is little surprise, then, that talk is already beginning to build around possible summer bids.
The report suggests Orient are preparing themselves for serious interest and are in no mood to accept a modest offer. With Ballard under contract and still only beginning to hit his stride at senior level, they appear keen to make it clear that any club wanting to test their resolve will need to pay a premium.
There is another layer to the story as well, because Southampton inserted a sell-on clause when Ballard left St Mary’s. That means any major fee would not only represent a huge piece of business for Orient, but also hand the Saints a useful boost before the next window opens.
