Lincolnshire Non-League Roundup

With many Lincolnshire non-league sides not in action on Good Friday, Saturday became a huge day across the United Counties League and Northern Counties East League, with promotion races, relegation battles and big local results shaping the weekend.

At the top end of the United Counties Premier North, there were huge games involving the leading sides, including a clash between league leaders Sherwood Colliery and Grantham Town. The Gingerbreads started brightly and took the lead after 13 minutes when Lee Shaw found the net to give Grantham the advantage. Sherwood gradually worked their way back into the game, but Grantham defended well for long periods and looked set to take a valuable result. However, the leaders equalised in the 86th minute, and with momentum suddenly on their side, Sherwood struck again almost immediately, Jamie York scoring with what was virtually the last kick of the game to secure a dramatic win. Despite the defeat, Grantham remained third after results elsewhere went in their favour.

One of those results came at Newark Town, where Boston Town secured an impressive 3-1 away win to stay level on points with Sherwood at the top. The first half was difficult for both teams due to the pitch conditions and strong winds, but Boston broke the deadlock in the 39th minute when Harry Limb chased a ball over the top, beat his defender and calmly finished into the bottom corner. Boston extended their lead in the 56th minute when Wilson headed home from a corner, and Bruno Andrade added a third in the 86th minute with a superb strike. Newark pulled one back late on, but Boston took all three points in what could prove to be a very important result in the title race.

Skegness Town were away at Hucknall Town and made a strong start, taking the lead after just eight minutes when Dakin crossed from the wing and Kyle Radford finished calmly. Hucknall responded well and equalised in the 32nd minute, and with strong winds affecting the game in the second half, chances were limited and the match finished 1-1 with the points shared.

At the bottom end of the table, Harrowby United picked up a rare but important win at home to Heanor Town. With relegation looking increasingly likely, Harrowby were playing largely for pride, but they put in a strong performance. The first half was goalless, again with the wind playing a big role, but Harrowby were awarded a penalty in the 50th minute which Calum Law converted to give them the lead. Late in the game, Mutatwarkel Eisa scored his first goal for the club to seal a 2-0 victory, which should give them confidence ahead of their local derby with Grantham.

In Division One, Sleaford Town needed points to move away from the relegation places and started well at home to FCU Grace Dieu. A great early save from Kamm kept the scores level before Sleaford began to control the game, with Dion Tansey-Potter hitting the post. The breakthrough came when Smith was tripped in the box and Kyle Onyon converted the penalty to give Sleaford a half-time lead. However, Grace Dieu equalised in the 68th minute and Sleaford could not find a winner, meaning they had to settle for a point, which was not enough to lift them out of the relegation places.

Pinchbeck United, also battling to avoid the drop, produced one of the performances of the weekend with a convincing 5-1 win away at Rainworth Miners Welfare. Owen Sheriff opened the scoring after just four minutes from a corner scramble, before Ward made it two in the 34th minute after going through one-on-one with the keeper. Two minutes later Aldridge made it three before half time, and Pinchbeck continued to dominate after the break, Elliot Foster scoring the fourth in the 70th minute. Rainworth pulled one back shortly after, but Luke Cullen added a fifth in the 81st minute to complete an excellent win that keeps their survival hopes alive.

Lincoln United look to have secured their safety after a convincing 4-1 win away at Pontefract Colliery. The hosts took the lead just before half time following a defensive lapse, but United responded immediately after the break. Kane Hutchinson-Wilks equalised after a Connor Brown effort was saved, and two minutes later Brown backheeled into the path of Charlie Carlisle, who scored to put United ahead. Substitute Hayden Havard made it three in the 86th minute, and Connor Brown capped an excellent performance by scoring United’s fourth late on to complete the turnaround and move the Whites closer to safety.

Brigg Town were playing their final home match of the season against Nostell Miners Welfare, and it turned into a memorable afternoon for Josh Batty. He opened the scoring in the 28th minute after a strong start from Brigg and added a second six minutes later with an excellent strike. Nostell pulled one back before half time, but Batty completed his hat-trick in the 85th minute and then scored his fourth of the game shortly afterwards to secure a 4-1 victory and a perfect final home game of the season for Brigg.
