Wycombe boss concedes play-off bid is all but over
Michael Duff has effectively admitted Wycombe Wanderers’ play-off hopes are finished after Easter Monday’s 2-1 home defeat to Bradford City, delivering a brutally honest assessment of where his side have fallen short this season.
The Chairboys have been hovering on the edge of the top-six conversation without ever quite forcing their way in, and Duff’s latest comments suggest he believes the pattern is too deeply ingrained to change over the final few games. He said:
“I think that’s the play-offs done for us now.”
Duff’s frustration appears to stem less from quality and more from temperament. He pointed to a set of underlying numbers that, on the face of it, ought to have Wycombe much higher in the table, saying:
“Goal difference third, goals scored fourth, goals against fifth, but we’re 11th in the league, which is impossible.”
For him, the explanation lies in repeated lapses at key moments and a mentality that has seen his side fall on the wrong side of tight contests too often.
There was also a pointed challenge to the squad in his remarks. Duff made clear that the remaining games now carry meaning beyond the table, with players effectively auditioning for their futures. He said they have had “the full version of me in the meeting” and insisted the final month will show him who wants to be part of things next season. It is the sort of language that suggests an interesting summer may be coming at Adams Park.
