Mansfield unlikely to repeat recent transfer flurry
Nigel Clough has indicated Mansfield Town are unlikely to be anywhere near as busy this summer as they were across the previous two transfer windows, with the Stags boss believing the bulk of the squad rebuild has already been done.
After securing survival last season, Mansfield reshaped heavily, moving on players such as Christy Pym, Scott Flinders and Lee Gregory before bringing in a raft of additions that included Ryan Sweeney, Liam Roberts and Regan Hendry. They then added further in January, signing Victor Adeboyejo and Harry Lewis permanently, while also taking George Abbott and Oliver Irow on loan. That volume of turnover is not expected to be repeated. Clough said:
“I don’t think there will be that many changes in the summer. We did all our business 12 months ago and in January as well, we signed more than 12 players in total and that’s enough for us. There’ll be maybe three or four coming in and the same going out. We want to improve this group.”
The suggestion is that Mansfield now feel they have a solid base to build from, rather than a squad in need of another overhaul. Clough also hinted that, while he is pleased with the work done at the back, future strengthening may be geared more towards the top end of the pitch. He said:
“Those we have defensively have done so well. So it is [attackers we are looking for].”
Even so, he also pointed to the number of attacking options already on the books, while noting that situations involving Tyler Roberts, Jon Russell and Abbott will have a bearing on what happens next.
