Championship Roundup: West Ham Eyeing Championship Swoop, QPR Plot Summer European Raid

The Championship is already throwing up transfer and squad-shaping stories ahead of the summer, with Coventry, QPR, Portsmouth and Middlesbrough all facing potentially significant decisions.

With promotion, survival and next season’s planning all colliding, there is already a familiar EFL feel to the latest headlines. Some clubs are trying to keep hold of key men, some are shopping smartly, and others are making hard choices with the run-in still alive.

Coventry City determined to keep Haji Wright

Coventry City are said to be increasingly confident they can resist renewed interest from West Ham and keep hold of Haji Wright, despite the striker entering the final year of his contract this summer.

The striker, who has scored 16 Championship goals this season, is entering the final year of his deal, making him an obvious target for top-flight clubs. West Ham are expected to push again at the end of the campaign, regardless of whether they retain their Premier League status.

However, Coventry’s stance appears firm. With promotion within touching distance, Frank Lampard has made it clear internally that he wants to retain his key players, and Wright is central to those plans. The forward is also understood to be settled and keen on the prospect of playing in the Premier League with the Sky Blues.

There is additional context around timing, too. Wright’s contract situation increases his appeal externally, but Coventry’s league position strengthens their hand. If they secure promotion, keeping him becomes far more realistic, both financially and in terms of the player’s own ambitions.
