Derby County make their Sammie Szmodics stance clear
John Eustace has openly admitted he wants Derby County to keep Sammie Szmodics beyond this season, with the Rams boss making it clear the forward’s value goes well beyond a simple goals and assists tally.
Managers do not always show their hand this clearly when summer business is on the horizon, but Eustace is certainly keen. Asked whether he would like to keep Szmodics, the Derby head coach gave an immediate and emphatic response.
“Sammy’s a fantastic human being. He’s great in the dressing room,” he said.
“He’s a top player still. The way he drives his standards every day and the way he performs is key.”
There is, of course, still a long way between admiration and a completed deal. Derby can want the player, but that does not mean the numbers will line up or that other factors will not intervene.
Even so, the message from Pride Park is now crystal clear. If there is a chance to turn this into a permanent move, Eustace wants the club to take it, and that makes Szmodics one of the names to watch closely once the summer window begins.
