Wycombe Wanderers boss Michael Duff has paid tribute to Lincoln City in his pre-match press conference, but has warned against distraction.
It’ll be a big day for Imps fans, with the League One trophy being presented, as well as celebrations around the 50th year anniversary of our historic Division Four title win.
While there will be lots going on around the stadium, and after the game, there is an important fixture to be played, and the players cannot afford to be distracted, as Duff covered.
“Well, if they are distracted, they’ll get beat,” he said.
“It will be a full house, there will be a party atmosphere, and it’s what we want to do with it. If we get caught watching and enjoying their celebrations, there’s something wrong with that in itself
“They have proved to be the best team in the league, and team being the main point in that.”
Duff, who was in charge of Cheltenham the day we secured promotion from League Two in 2019, has done a solid job with Wycombe this season after a horror start under Michael Dodds, which resulted in him being sacked.
Duff was in charge back in November when they took a 2-0 lead against us, only to see us fight back in the second half. Our recovery was almost completed by a late chance we missed, and immediately after, they grabbed themselves a winner.
That was the last game we lost in the league, and Duff has said he feels were were unlucky to lose that game.
“It feels like forever ago. I think it’s nearly five months or just over five months to the day but even on that day, they were lucky to get beat, probably.
“We thought we were excellent first half, deservedly in the game, but they totally dominated the second half and showed a little bit of spirit and a little bit of, probably something we haven’t, not spirit, we haven’t shown enough of, of finding a way to get a better result than maybe what the performance or the game panned out.
“A fair result, which you don’t often get in football, would have been probably a draw, but something we haven’t shown enough of and they clearly have.”
Wycombe come to City for the final home game of the season for the third time, and on each occasion, there has been movement for the Imps. In 1988, a 2-0 win secured our promotion back to the Football League, while in 1999, a 3-1 defeat saw us relegated from the third tier.
Oddly, they were also the first team we played on returning to the EFL in 2017, with the sides sharing a 2-2 draw at Adams Park.
