Tayo Edun

Is 28 Championship appearances a flop? I think so, but only because of how good Tayo Edun was for us. Some of our big hopes have sidestepped in League One. Others have risen and fallen, but Edun had something really special. I rated him so highly, and for him to now be kicking it in League One, for me, is a disappointment, because on his day, he’s walk into the current Lincoln City side.
He arrived in January 2020 from Fulham, with a brief spell at Ipswich behind him, and while he was initially used in midfield, it soon became clear his real value was in that left-sided role where he could do a bit of everything. Whether at full-back or stepping inside, he gave us balance, composure and a real sense of control in possession. His standout period came in the 2020-21 season, when he played 42 league games as we pushed into the play-offs, and there were moments that stuck, not least his goal against Liverpool in the EFL Cup, which underlined his ability on a bigger stage. He was calm under pressure, quick across the ground and intelligent with his movement, which made him one of the most reliable players in that side.
It always felt like he would move on, and that came early in the following season when Blackburn Rovers paid around £550,000 to take him to the Championship. He had his moments there, but never quite nailed down a regular place, drifting in and out before spells with Charlton Athletic and Peterborough United followed. In June 2025, he joined Stockport County, continuing a career that has seen him settle into that adaptable, dependable mould. For us, he finished with 65 appearances and three goals, and while those numbers are modest, his impact during that promotion push and the balance he brought to the side made him a far more important player than the raw stats suggest.
At 27, he isn’t too old to step up again, something that could happen with Stockport this season, so I might need to revisit this article!
