Derby County and Millwall Join Hunt For 20-Goal League One Striker

Championship clubs are circling for Plymouth Argyle striker Lorent Tolaj after a prolific first season at Home Park.

Tolaj has emerged as one of the most sought-after forwards outside the second tier after delivering an impressive return in his debut campaign with the Pilgrims. His tally of 20 goals across all competitions has placed him firmly on the radar of clubs looking to strengthen in the final third.

Among those now credited with interest are Derby County and Millwall, both of whom are assessing options up front as they prepare for the next phase of their respective seasons. Derby’s need has been sharpened by a serious injury to Patrick Agyemang, leaving a gap in their attacking ranks that they are keen to address.

Millwall, meanwhile, are also exploring ways to add greater cutting edge, with their recruitment team understood to be monitoring several potential targets, including Tolaj.

The striker’s rise has been swift. Signed by Plymouth from Port Vale for a relatively modest fee last summer, he has quickly developed into one of League One’s most productive attackers. That form has not gone unnoticed, and it now appears increasingly likely that he could step up a division regardless of how Plymouth’s campaign concludes.

There is no shortage of competition for his signature either. A number of clubs across the Championship have been linked, while interest is not limited to England, with Celtic also reported to be tracking his progress.

Elsewhere, Sheffield United and Preston North End are believed to be keeping a close eye on developments, while recently relegated Leicester City are another side credited with interest as they plan for a return push.

Tolaj’s output this season underlines why demand is growing. His goal return places him among the division’s most effective finishers, while his overall contribution in front of goal, including assists and underlying metrics, suggests a player capable of adapting to a higher level.

For Plymouth, the situation presents both opportunity and challenge. Having invested a relatively small fee to bring him in, they now stand to command a significant profit should bids materialise. They’re under no pressure to sell, and should he move on, any fee is expected to be over the £1m mark.

With multiple clubs expected to firm up their interest once the window opens, Tolaj’s future looks set to become one of the more closely followed transfer stories of the summer.
