‘Not Getting Carried Away’ – Manchester United Legend On Lincoln City Promotion

It seems like every man and his dog has a view on Lincoln City, and this week, we popped up on popular podcast The Overlap.

Ali Maxwell, a friend of the podcast, was on a panel discussing our promotion, but in the hot seat was former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney. Rooney, a former manager himself at Plymouth Argyle, Derby County, and DC United, scored 53 goals for his country, appearing 120 times.

He was asked about Michael Skubala and Lincoln City, and he pinpointed patience as one of the virtues that have seen us win League One. Patience and good recruitment, of course.

“Lincoln have a bit of patience,” said Rooney. “When you’ve got a club who have the structure, and recruitment is right and you’re not getting carried away, ‘if we bring this player in or the these two players in we think these will get us promotion’ but actually having a bit more patience and saying if we can gradually keep adding to it and in three or four years time this might get us to to the next level.

“I think that’s so that’s key really, rather than trying to just get everything too soon. That’s what’s happened with Lincoln, and they are certainly getting the benefits of that now.”

The Imps are facing the first Championship season since 1960/61, when we suffered the first of back-to-back relegations and a decade in the doldrums. This time around the second tier is a different beast, and the Imps will have to be well prepared for the challenges ahead.

Rooney, sadly, was not. He was in charge of Derby County and ketp them in the Championship, before a points deduction led them to League One. After a spell in America, he returned, and managed Birmingham City. They were sixth when he arrived, and were relegated at the end of the season. He then took over at Plymouth Argyle for a period before their relegation, lasting seven months (two during pre-season) before leaving them in the bottom three.
