Lincoln City Players Whose Talent Was Lost To Injury After Moving On

Anthony Scully

There was no doubting Anthony Scully’s talents. He never really fitted into Michael Appleton’s side, not being an out-and-out winger, probably too small to be a centre forward, and rarely trusted in the ten. But just a few short months after signing, he scored against Oxford to kick off the 2020/21 season, and he never stopped.

I hear ‘Brennan Johnson’ a lot, and ‘Morgan Rogers’ and even ‘Jorge Grant’, but even among those giants, Scully was the joint-leading scorer. He could cut in from the left and curl magnificent efforts in, and for a while, he was the darling of the Imps’ faithful.

His legacy suffers a little from being the big cheese during the 2021/22 season, notorious for being the worst since 2016/17. He was still the leading scorer, and he started life under Mark Kennedy as he finished it under Michael Appleton: bagging goals. When Wigan, a Championship side, came in with a six-figure bid, it felt natural that he’d go.

He scored 36 goals in 106 Lincoln City matches, and left in August 2022, having already netted three in eight. In the four seasons since that move, he’s started just 29 league matches, 23 of those coming this season in League Two.

The Anthony Scully that left us was better than League Two. He had the quality to survive in the Championship, but a series of injuries and operations robbed him of that chance. He’s now a free agent, but at 27, and with 30+ games this season, only the third time in his career he’s achieved that, he could be an interesting pick up for someone.

  1. I missed the Tony James days because I was working abroad, which from a supporters view point is disappointing. As for the rest I’m glad I’ve been a part of.
