Wrexham could soon find themselves fighting to keep hold of one of their most influential attackers, with Rangers stepping up their interest in Josh Windass ahead of the summer transfer window.
According to a report from GiveMeSport, Rangers have opened talks over a move for the 32-year-old attacker, with Danny Rohl keen to reunite with a player he previously worked with at Sheffield Wednesday. After missing out on the title this season, Rohl will be keen to push Celtic much harder in 2026/27.
Windass only arrived at Wrexham last summer, but enjoyed an impressive campaign as the Red Dragons maintained a push for the play-off places. The former Rangers man contributed 21 goal involvements during the season and became a key figure in Phil Parkinson’s attacking setup.
The report claims Rangers attempted to sign Windass during the January transfer window, but Wrexham rejected their approach at the time. However, with Rohl now driving the pursuit, the Scottish giants appear ready to test the waters once again.
While Rangers are yet to open formal club-to-club negotiations, there is a growing feeling north of the border that Windass could become part of a major summer rebuild at Ibrox.
Windass is no stranger to the Glasgow club, having previously scored 12 goals and provided 13 assists during his spell at Ibrox before moving on to Wigan Athletic. His versatility, experience and understanding of the Scottish game could make him an attractive option as Rohl looks to reshape his squad.
For Wrexham, losing a player of Windass’ quality would undoubtedly be a blow. The club have made remarkable progress under Hollywood ownership and have Premier League ambition, but interest from clubs with European aspirations and top-flight pressure will inevitably test their resolve.
There is also another attacking addition emerging for Rangers, with BBC Scotland reporting that the club have agreed a deal for Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland, subject to a medical.
The Scotland international is expected to become Danny Rohl’s first signing at Ibrox and arrives after another prolific spell with Hearts, where he scored 88 goals in 171 appearances. The move suggests Rangers are looking to add proven experience and leadership to their forward line, with Windass potentially viewed as another player capable of contributing immediately in a high-pressure environment.
