Wrexham Make Transfer Decision To Weaken League One Promotion Hopefuls

Paul Mullin will return to Wrexham this week after his loan spell at Wigan Athletic was brought to an early end.

The striker joined Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan earlier in the campaign but has not featured since coming on as a substitute in the 2-0 defeat to Blackpool on December 20. He has since been left out of the Latics’ squad for their last four League One matches under manager Ryan Lowe.

The striker has scored five times in 26 matches for the Latics, including a goal against Lincoln in the 2-2 draw back in September.

He won’t be scoring any more, as Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson confirmed the decision to terminate the loan and said the forward would be assessed on his return to the club.

“Mulls’ loan spell has been terminated,” said Parkinson.

“We’ll have a chat with him this week when he comes back in. He needs to train this week as he’s missed a few days of training. I’ve only spoken to him briefly over the Christmas period.

“We haven’t really been in training much because of the games and staying in hotels. I’ll touch base with him and we’ll have a good chat when he comes in this week.”

Mullin is under contract with Wrexham until the summer of 2027 and has been one of the club’s most prolific players in recent seasons. He scored 110 goals in 170 appearances and played a major role in Wrexham’s rise from the National League to the Championship.

However, he slipped down the pecking order during the second half of last season following the arrivals of Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez. His last League One appearance for Wrexham came when he scored off the bench in a 3-2 home defeat to Stevenage on January 28.

His move to Wigan was seen as a coup, them capturing a player who had been key for Wrexham during their rise. While his return gives Wrexham an additional attacking option as they assess their squad heading into the second half of the campaign, it’s unlikely he’ll play regular Championship minutes.

The move frees up squad space for Wigan, who are expected to continue reshaping their forward line during the January window after a tepid half-season during which a play-off push was widely expected.
