Lincoln City Chamopionship Rivals Brutally Sack Manager After Family Spot Exit Rumours

Wolverhampton Wanderers, a rival of Lincoln City this coming season, have sacked head coach Rob Edwards just seven months after his return to Molineux, leaving the newly relegated Championship club looking for another reset before the new season.

According to some reports, the former Luton boss first heard of his sacking after members of his family saw rumours of Peixoto’s appointment on social media, and he called the club to see if there was any truth in them!

Edwards, who made more than 100 appearances for Wolves during his playing career, was appointed in November after leaving Middlesbrough, but he was unable to prevent the club dropping out of the Premier League. His departure comes after a difficult spell in charge, with Wolves finishing bottom of the table and winning only five of his 30 matches in all competitions.

The decision marks a sharp change in tone from the club, who had publicly maintained that Edwards remained part of their plans as they prepared for life back in the Championship. Technical director Matt Jackson had recently spoken about the need for alignment across the club, with Wolves aiming to build a squad capable of making an immediate return to the top flight.

Wolves Make Change After Relegation

According to BBC Sport, Cesar Peixoto has already been linked with the vacancy. The Portuguese coach guided Gil Vicente to sixth place in the Primeira Liga during the 2025/26 season and is now being mentioned as a possible successor at Molineux.

Wolves had already begun shaping their squad for the Championship, with Kieran Trippier joining on a free transfer from Newcastle United and Raul Jimenez returning to the club after his Fulham contract ran down. Edwards was understood to have played a role in those early summer moves, which makes the timing of his exit particularly striking.

Jackson had said last month that the club’s plan was to win promotion straight away, while also warning that significant change was required after relegation.

“The plan and the goal is to get promoted straight away but we understand a lot of change has to take place.

“If there isn’t alignment here, we’re dead in the water before we start, so that discussion has been going on for months already.”

Rob Edwards at Wolves

Edwards had arrived at Wolves after leaving Middlesbrough, where he had been part of a Championship promotion race. His move back to Molineux was a return to familiar surroundings, having previously played for the club and later worked within their coaching structure.

However, the challenge he inherited proved too much. Wolves were already in serious trouble when he replaced Vitor Pereira, and their Premier League campaign never recovered. Edwards won five games, lost 16 and was left to front up after relegation was confirmed.

His exit leaves Wolves facing another period of uncertainty at a point when relegated clubs are usually trying to move quickly and decisively. With recruitment already underway and expectations high ahead of their return to the Championship, the next appointment will be central to whether they can mount an immediate promotion challenge or face a longer rebuild.
