Former Lincoln City forward Anthony Scully has joined the PFA pre-season training camp as he searches for a new club.

Scully, sold to Wigan in 2022 for more than £200,000, has joined the PFA pre-season training camp as he searches for a new club. is among the latest group of out-of-contract players attending the camp at Champneys Springs in Leicestershire. The programme gives free agents access to professional coaching, fitness work, friendly matches and wellbeing support while they consider their next moves.

The 27-year-old was released by Shrewsbury Town following the expiration of his one-year contract. He made 35 appearances in all competitions during his season with the Shropshire club, scoring five times and providing two assists.

His campaign was interrupted by injuries, including a hamstring issue. Scully had previously endured knee and ankle problems during his spell with Portsmouth, with surgery on the latter requiring a metal plate to be inserted and subsequently removed.

Scully joined Shrewsbury last summer, reuniting with Michael Appleton, the manager who brought him to Sincil Bank from West Ham United in February 2020.

The forward scored on his first Imps start against Accrington Stanley and quickly established himself as an important part of Appleton’s squad. He helped City reach the League One play-off final during the 2020/21 season and finished his time at the club with 37 goals from 106 appearances in all competitions.

His tally included two goals in the 5-1 victory at Cambridge United, as well as memorable strikes against Sunderland, Plymouth Argyle and Sheffield Wednesday. Scully left for Wigan Athletic in September 2022, with City receiving a fee for a player who had arrived from West Ham without making a senior appearance.

Spells with Portsmouth and Colchester United followed before his move to Shrewsbury. He is now attempting to secure the next opportunity of his career while maintaining his fitness through the PFA programme.

Scully is not the only former Lincoln player involved in this summer’s camp. Tyler Walker, John Marquis and James Jones have also featured among the free agents using the initiative.

Walker scored 16 times during a loan spell at Sincil Bank in the 2019/20 season, while Marquis registered five goals in 20 league appearances after arriving in January 2022. Jones was part of the side that reached the play-off final in 2021, making 45 appearances across all competitions during his single season with the Imps.

The PFA camp is open to members who were under professional contracts during the previous campaign, offering players an opportunity to train together and potentially impress watching clubs and representatives.
