Former Lincoln City defender Lewis Montsma has joined League Two side Port Vale on trial as he looks to secure his next move.
The Dutch centre-back appeared for the Valiants during their latest pre-season fixture, a 3-1 win against Wigan Athletic, with his identity initially prompting speculation among supporters on social media. He was later named as the mystery trialist, having been released by Scottish side Dundee at the end of last season.

Montsma spent five-and-a-half years at Sincil Bank after arriving from FC Dordrecht in the summer of 2020. He was a relatively unknown signing from the Dutch second tier, but quickly became one of the most popular players at the club.
The defender scored six times during his first nine appearances for the Imps, including memorable efforts against Bradford City, Liverpool and Charlton Athletic. His composure on the ball, willingness to carry possession out of defence and ability to produce spectacular goals made him an immediate favourite.

Montsma finished his outstanding debut season with nine goals in all competitions as City reached the League One play-off final. His performances also earned him a place in the 2020/21 PFA League One Team of the Year.
However, his time at Sincil Bank was later disrupted by two serious anterior cruciate ligament injuries. The first was suffered against Oxford United in January 2022 and kept him out for more than a year before he returned against Cambridge United the following January.
Montsma made only eight appearances after his comeback before rupturing his ACL again, along with suffering additional damage to his knee. That setback ruled him out for the whole of the 2023/24 campaign and presented him with another long and demanding rehabilitation programme.
His determination to return from both injuries further strengthened his relationship with City supporters. Montsma eventually played again in August 2024, appearing in a League Cup defeat against Harrogate Town after spending around 15 months on the sidelines.

He made 21 appearances during the 2024/25 season, although his opportunities became increasingly limited as the Imps strengthened their defensive options. Four cup outings followed during the first half of last season before he completed a permanent move to Dundee on deadline day in February.
The 28-year-old signed a six-month agreement with the Scottish Premiership club, which included an option for a longer stay, but he was released when that short-term deal expired.
Montsma is now attempting to earn a contract with Port Vale, who are preparing for the new League Two campaign. A successful trial would give him another opportunity in the EFL and potentially place him in direct competition with several of his former Lincoln teammates during the coming season.
Whatever comes next, Montsma will retain cult-hero status at Sincil Bank. He arrived from relative obscurity, produced one of the most memorable debut seasons of recent times and twice fought his way back from injuries that threatened to end his professional career.
