Last year, Lincoln City had a lot of success with the PFA free agent camp, plucking Adam Reach from its ranks to win the League One title.
This season, players such as Jack Vale and James Jones have featured, as well as plenty of others. It’s now into week four, and the rotation of players continues, with a couple of new former Imps now joining up for training.
John Marquis, Anthony Scully and Tyler Walker have been there for a week or two already, Marquis impressing in their pre-season friendly against Barnet. Walker and Scully are looking to prove their fitness to potential League Two clubs, with Scully still only 27 and fresh off the back of 35 matches for Shrewsbury Town last season.
There are now two more names on the list; they go back a little further in our history than the attacking trio.
Jake Caprice, the first new ex-Imp on the list, joined City on a one-year deal in August 2014 after leaving Blackpool. The right-back made his debut in a goalless draw with Kidderminster Harriers on the opening day and went on to become a regular member of Gary Simpson’s side, despite initially competing with Tom Miller for a place. He made 37 appearances for the Imps during the 2014/15 campaign and provided an assist for Ben Tomlinson in a 3-1 victory over Nuneaton Town.
Caprice was released by City at the end of that season and joined Woking, later facing the Imps in Lincoln’s opening fixture of the 2016/17 National League title-winning campaign. He subsequently represented Leyton Orient, Tranmere Rovers, Exeter City, Burton Albion and Oldham Athletic, with the highlight of his later career coming at Wembley in 2019, when his cross created Tranmere’s extra-time winner in the League Two play-off final.
Josh Ginnelly is also at the camp. He joined the Imps on loan from Burnley in January 2017 and made 17 appearances across all competitions as Danny Cowley’s side won the National League title. The winger made his debut in a 3-2 victory over Woking and remained part of the squad during the closing months of a campaign which secured City’s return to the Football League. He returned to Sincil Bank on a season-long loan that summer, scoring on the opening day of the 2017/18 season in a 2-2 draw with Wycombe Wanderers.
Ginnelly scored three times in 19 appearances during his second spell, also finding the net against Notts County and Stevenage before Burnley recalled him in January 2018. He later represented Tranmere Rovers, Walsall, Preston North End, Hearts and Swansea City, with his career disrupted by a serious Achilles injury in 2023. After leaving Swansea, he joined Azerbaijan Premier League side Turan Tovuz in January 2026. He was used sparingly in the Premyer Liqa, with just a single start, and no goals or assists in his 10 outings.
