West Ham United are considering a move for Leicester City defender Ben Nelson as Nuno Espirito Santo looks to strengthen his options at centre-back, according to Football Insider.
The Hammers are believed to have watched the 22-year-old during Leicester’s relegation campaign in the Championship, with his individual performances attracting interest despite the Foxes dropping into League One.
Nelson is expected to be among the players targeted by clubs higher up the pyramid this summer, although Leicester’s reported valuation could complicate any potential departure. The defender has entered the final 12 months of the contract he signed in December 2023, placing further pressure on the Foxes to decide whether to sell or risk losing him for a reduced fee.
West Ham’s need for defensive reinforcements has increased following Axel Disasi’s return to Chelsea at the end of his loan spell. Konstantinos Mavropanos has also been linked with a departure, potentially leaving Nuno short of established central defenders before the new Championship campaign.
However, the Hammers are unlikely to have a clear run at Nelson. Recent reports have also credited Manchester United, Torino and Borussia Monchengladbach with an interest, while Leicester are said to value their academy graduate at around £10 million.
Born in Northampton, Nelson joined Leicester’s academy at the age of nine and was named the club’s Academy Player of the Season during the 2020/21 campaign. He gained senior experience during loan spells with Rochdale and Doncaster Rovers before making his Leicester debut in an EFL Cup victory over Tranmere Rovers in August 2023.
The 6ft 5in defender later spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Oxford United, although a quadriceps injury interrupted his campaign. He returned to Leicester last term and made 27 appearances across all competitions, scoring once as the Foxes were relegated.
Nelson, who can operate at centre-back or left-back, has represented both Scotland and England at youth level. His combination of Championship experience, age and versatility has made him an attractive option, but Leicester’s asking price may determine whether West Ham turn their interest into a formal offer.
