There were goals, red cards and plenty of derby drama as Lincolnshire’s non-league sides continued their league campaigns on Tuesday evening.
Louth Town and Sleaford Town both recorded emphatic victories in the United Counties League Division One, while nine-man Brigg Town produced a determined defensive display to edge past Field Olympic in the Northern Counties East League Division One.
Louth Town 4 Harrowby United 0
Louth Town secured their first league victory of the season with an impressive 4-0 win against previously unbeaten Harrowby United.
The visitors travelled north with a 100% record, while Louth had collected their first point of the campaign at the weekend. However, it was the hosts who settled quickest and looked the stronger side during the opening stages.
Their positive start was rewarded in the 22nd minute when Kieran Perry opened the scoring. The goal appeared to lift Louth, who began to play with a confidence that had been missing from their opening fixtures.
Perry was involved again as the home side doubled their advantage three minutes before the interval. This time, he turned provider by setting up Harry Jacklin, who made it 2-0.
The first half was extended by 16 minutes, contributing to a remarkable total of 26 additional minutes across the game. Despite the competitive nature of the derby and several forceful challenges, only one player was booked.
Harrowby emerged with greater intensity after the break and attempted to force a route back into the contest, but Louth stood firm before putting the result beyond doubt in the 80th minute.
Harvey Lidgard struck a magnificent volley into the corner to make it 3-0. He then claimed his second goal seven minutes later, completing a memorable 4-0 victory for the White Wolves.
It was Louth’s first win of the season and a result which should provide a significant lift after a difficult start. Harrowby, meanwhile, must quickly put the defeat behind them after their perfect opening to the campaign came to an abrupt end.
Sleaford Town 4 Pinchbeck United 0
Sleaford Town also enjoyed a dominant derby victory as they swept aside Pinchbeck United at Eslaforde Park.
The Greens entered the game having recorded their first win of the season at the weekend, while Pinchbeck were still searching for their opening victory. It took Sleaford just five minutes to move ahead.
The hosts were awarded an early penalty, with Josh Parker stepping forward and confidently converting from the spot.
Sleaford took control after the opener and created a number of opportunities before adding a deserved second goal in the 33rd minute. A long ball was brought under control by Parker, whose lay-off allowed Clayton Wilkinson to slot past the stranded goalkeeper.
The 2-0 half-time score reflected a dominant opening period from the home side, and they required only four minutes of the second half to extend their advantage.
Another direct ball opened up the Pinchbeck defence, with Dion Tansey-Potter waiting at the far post to apply a simple finish.
Sleaford continued to attack with confidence and struck both the post and the side netting before completing the scoring in the 79th minute. Kyle Onyon found the net to seal an emphatic 4-0 victory.
Successive wins have given Sleaford an encouraging platform from which to build, with the manner of Tuesday’s performance likely to be particularly pleasing. They controlled the contest, created chances throughout and rarely allowed Pinchbeck an opportunity to respond.
For the visitors, it was another concerning evening. They were outfought and outplayed for long periods and remain without a victory during the opening weeks of the campaign.
Brigg Town 1 Field Olympic 0
Brigg Town finished with nine players but still collected all three points following a battling 1-0 home win against Field Olympic.
The Zebras were looking to respond after an unexpected defeat in their previous fixture. The first half was evenly contested, with both sides creating opportunities without finding a breakthrough.
Brigg showed greater resilience than they had at the weekend, combining committed tackling with some well-organised passages of play. The sides remained level at the interval, but the deadlock was broken shortly after the restart.
A free kick was awarded around 25 yards from goal and Reece York stepped forward to place an excellent effort into the top-left corner.
Brigg almost doubled their advantage minutes later, only for the Field Olympic goalkeeper to keep the ball out with his legs.
The contest became increasingly heated, with players from both sides booked following a series of rash challenges. Brigg were reduced to ten when Josh Batty, having already been cautioned, threw the ball at the visiting goalkeeper and received a second yellow card.
The situation became even more difficult 12 minutes later when Josh Jordon was dismissed after preventing what appeared to be a certain equaliser.
Despite being reduced to nine, Brigg defended their narrow lead and continued to create opportunities at the other end. Their determined display was eventually rewarded with a hard-earned clean sheet and all three points.
Manager Stephen McCarron was unhappy with several of the officials’ decisions and declined to expand on his thoughts after the final whistle. However, he was proud of the way his players responded to adversity and continued fighting after both dismissals.
It was a valuable victory for the Zebras ahead of their return to action on Friday night, even if the disciplinary incidents will have given McCarron further issues to address.
