Portsmouth are closing in on a £2.5 million deal to bring Hull City winger Abu Kamara back to Fratton Park on a permanent basis.
The 23-year-old is expected to undergo a medical before completing the move, with Pompey finally set to secure a player they have wanted to re-sign for some time. Charlton Athletic had also shown an interest, but were reportedly unable to match the offer made by Portsmouth.
According to the latest report, Hull are ready to sanction Kamara’s departure for a fee in the region of £2.5 million. The deal would bring an end to his two-year association with the Tigers, during which he made 40 appearances and scored five goals.
Kamara is already well known at Fratton Park after spending the 2023/24 season on loan from Norwich City. He featured in every League One fixture during that campaign, scoring eight league goals and ten in all competitions as Portsmouth won the title and secured promotion to the Championship.
That spell remains the most productive period of his senior career and helped establish him after only a handful of first-team appearances for Norwich. Portsmouth have retained their interest ever since, and a permanent reunion now appears close to completion.
Hull signed the winger from Norwich in August 2024 on a four-year contract. His first campaign included a memorable brace in a 3-3 draw with Leeds United, but he was unable to build enough consistency to become an undisputed starter at the MKM Stadium.
Kamara spent last season on loan with Getafe, although injuries restricted him to 12 La Liga appearances. He returned to Hull for pre-season this summer and scored in a 3-0 victory over Konyaspor before also featuring against Rizespor and Kasimpasa.
Those outings offered him an opportunity to press his case for a place in Hull’s Premier League squad, but the club now look ready to cash in. A £2.5 million sale would also remove a player who had spent much of the previous campaign away from the first-team picture.
Why it’s a good fit for player and club
The attraction for Pompey is clear. Kamara understands the club, has previously thrived under John Mousinho and has already demonstrated that he can cope with the expectations attached to playing at Fratton Park.
The move would also offer the winger a chance to rebuild momentum after a disrupted season in Spain. Rather than beginning again in unfamiliar surroundings, he would return to a club where his pace, direct running and willingness to work without the ball have already been valued.
Provided the medical and final paperwork are completed without complications, Kamara will become the latest addition to Portsmouth’s squad. Hull, meanwhile, will receive a significant fee for a player who appears to have reached the end of his time with the Tigers.
