Former Lincoln City goalkeeper Alex Palmer is reportedly attracting interest from Wrexham, with the Welsh club believed to have made an enquiry about signing the Ipswich Town stopper.
According to the Daily Mail, Wrexham have asked about the availability of Palmer as Phil Parkinson looks to strengthen his goalkeeping options before the transfer window closes.
The 29-year-old is reportedly valued at around £3.5 million by Ipswich, where he has two years remaining on his contract. Wrexham have seemingly been searching extensively for another goalkeeper this summer, with Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson and Sheffield Wednesday’s Pierce Charles among other names linked with a move to the Racecourse Ground.
Palmer is someone City supporters will remember extremely well from the 2020/21 season. He arrived at Sincil Bank on loan from West Bromwich Albion alongside Callum Morton and immediately established himself as Michael Appleton’s first-choice goalkeeper.
He played every one of our 46 League One matches as the Imps mounted an unexpected promotion challenge, eventually finishing fifth before beating Sunderland in the play-off semi-finals. Palmer also played one of the semi-final matches and the final against Blackpool at Wembley, making 58 appearances across all competitions during an excellent campaign.
His career took a little while to gather momentum after leaving City, but he eventually established himself at West Brom. Palmer became their regular Championship goalkeeper and enjoyed arguably his best individual campaign in 2023/24, when he shared the Championship Golden Glove with Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
Ipswich then took him to Portman Road in February 2025, giving Palmer his first opportunity in the Premier League. His debut came against Aston Villa later that month, when he produced an impressive display as ten-man Town earned a 1-1 draw.
He subsequently played a part in Ipswich winning promotion back to the Premier League last season, although his involvement was limited to ten Championship appearances. With Gary O’Neil now in charge at Portman Road following Kieran McKenna’s departure this summer, Palmer’s position appears to have become one worth watching.
A move to Wrexham would potentially give the former City loanee another opportunity to become a regular number one. Parkinson’s side finished seventh in the Championship last season after their remarkable climb through the divisions, narrowly missing out on the play-offs.
Whether Wrexham are prepared to meet Ipswich’s reported £3.5 million valuation remains to be seen, but Palmer could now be on the move again five years after his hugely successful season between the sticks at Sincil Bank.
