Gary Taylor-Fletcher arrived at Sincil Bank after Leyton Orient had already spent money on him and then seemingly spent much of his time trying to find somewhere else for him to play. Orient had paid Northwich Victoria £50,000 in 2001 after he had impressed against them, but he managed just one league goal in 21 appearances and was sent out on loan to Grays Athletic and twice to Dagenham & Redbridge.

By the summer of 2003, Orient were happy to let him leave on a free transfer, and Keith Alexander brought him to City having already worked with him at Northwich. What followed was a complete transformation. Taylor-Fletcher scored 30 goals in 93 appearances across two seasons, won the Supporters’ Player of the Year award in 2003/04 and, at the start of the following campaign, equalled a 106-year-old club record by scoring in each of the opening six games.
