Former Lincoln City midfielder Sam Clucas is searching for a new club after leaving Shrewsbury Town by mutual consent.
The 35-year-old joined Salop from the Imps last summer, signing a two-year contract after turning down the opportunity to remain at Sincil Bank in a player-coach capacity.
However, his time in Shropshire has ended halfway through that agreement. Shrewsbury confirmed his departure shortly before their League Two fixture against Barnet, bringing months of uncertainty surrounding his future to a conclusion.
Clucas had been told by manager Gavin Cowan that he was not part of his plans for the new season and was one of four players made available for transfer during the summer. Despite attracting interest from elsewhere, the Lincoln-born midfielder reportedly chose not to pursue the opportunities presented to him.
He continued training with Shrewsbury during pre-season and remained around the first-team squad, although he was not included in tactical meetings or sessions focused specifically on forthcoming matches. At times, he also trained separately from Cowan’s main group.
An agreement was eventually reached to terminate the final year of his contract, leaving Clucas available to join another club as a free agent. His exit is also expected to create additional space in Shrewsbury’s budget, with the former Premier League midfielder understood to have been among their higher earners.
Clucas featured prominently during his only full season at the Croud Meadow, initially under former Imps boss Michael Appleton. His versatility saw him used in central midfield and at left wing-back, and he started each of Shrewsbury’s opening 30 league matches. He also began Cowan’s first two games in charge before sustaining a hamstring injury just 20 minutes into the meeting with Colchester United.
That injury disrupted the closing months of his campaign, with Clucas making only five further appearances before the end of the season. Nevertheless, he finished as Shrewsbury’s leading assist provider with five and also scored twice.
In total, he made 40 appearances in all competitions for the League Two side. The club’s brief departure statement thanked him for his efforts and wished him well for the future.
Clucas And Lincoln City
Clucas has had two separate spells with his hometown club. He initially joined City in 2009 after impressing on trial, making his senior debut in the Football League Trophy before being released the following summer.
He subsequently rebuilt his career through spells with Jerez Industrial, Hereford United, Mansfield Town and Chesterfield. That rise eventually carried him to Hull City, where he won promotion to the Premier League and became one of the few players to score in five successive divisions while moving upwards through the pyramid.
Spells with Swansea City, Stoke City, Rotherham United and Oldham Athletic followed before he returned to Lincoln in January 2025. He made eight league appearances during the second half of the 2024/25 campaign and scored once, finding the net away at Mansfield Town.
City offered Clucas the opportunity to remain with the club in a player-coach role, but he felt he still had more to offer on the pitch. Speaking after his move to Shrewsbury, he explained that a lack of regular football with the Imps had been difficult and that he was not ready to begin winding down his playing career.
His decision initially appeared justified as he became an important member of Appleton’s Shrewsbury side, registering more competitive minutes than any other Town player before his hamstring problem.
A little more than a year later, Clucas is looking for the next destination in a career which has taken him from Lincoln to the Premier League and back again. Whether that next opportunity comes in the EFL, non-league or further afield remains to be seen, but he is now free to sign for another club following the cancellation of his Shrewsbury contract.
