Lincoln City did not allow Ethan Wheatley’s modest goalscoring record to obscure the qualities which persuaded them to bring the Manchester United striker to Sincil Bank.
The 20-year-old joined us on a season-long loan towards the end of the summer transfer window, adding further pace and athleticism to Chris Cohen and Tom Shaw’s attacking options. His arrival followed loan spells with Walsall, Northampton Town and Bradford City, although his time away from Old Trafford has not yet delivered a prolific return.
Wheatley scored three times in 25 appearances across all competitions for Northampton during the first half of last season. Manchester United recalled him in January before sending him to Bradford, who were challenging for promotion from League One.
He made 11 league appearances for the Bantams without finding the net, but City’s assessment went much deeper than appearances and goals. Sporting director Jez George believes the underlying qualities which brought Wheatley through the Manchester United academy make him an exciting addition to our squad.
“With Ethan, last year was frustrating for him during the second half of the season because he had a brilliant first half of the year with Northampton,” he told me in an exclusive interview this week.
“He moved to a club who were challenging for promotion and probably didn’t quite have the success he wanted.
“But we just saw his attributes. We didn’t see his record, number of goals or number of appearances in the second half of last year.
“We saw pure pace, pure athleticism and top-end quality. He’s an elite player.”
Wheatley has been with Manchester United since the age of nine and became the club’s 250th academy graduate when Erik ten Hag handed him his senior debut against Sheffield United in April 2024. He has subsequently represented England at under-19 and under-20 level, while gaining experience of the demands of senior football through four loan moves.
His career has not followed a straightforward upward trajectory since that Old Trafford breakthrough, but that does not appear to concern City. The club believe the Championship environment at Lincoln, alongside the work undertaken by Cohen, Shaw and their coaching staff, can provide Wheatley with the platform required to translate his raw ability into consistent senior performances.
“Going back to Ethan, we don’t need to see loads of him to know the attributes he has, and we believe those attributes can come out really well for us.
“There’ll be a lot of players we sign who we think will be really valuable for us, and we say that to players.”
That approach has already served City well. Rather than concentrating solely on what a player has achieved elsewhere, the recruitment team consider how his attributes might fit our style and what he could become within the environment at the club.
Jez used Rob Street as an example of a player whose potential was identified before his performances necessarily made him an obvious target.
“Maybe not everybody would’ve signed Rob Street two years ago, but we saw things we loved about Rob, such as his physical attributes and mentality.
“We just thought, ‘Yeah, if we give this guy a chance, he can’t not be a good player for us.’”
Street has since developed into an important member of the squad, and City will hope Wheatley can follow a similar path. There is no guarantee that his pace and athleticism will immediately translate into goals, especially after stepping into the Championship for the first time, but the club clearly believe those qualities provide an excellent foundation.
Wheatley arrives with something to prove after a difficult conclusion to last season. However, City’s decision was based on what they believe he can offer us now, rather than a simple reading of what he has done before.
