The Imps were seconds away from eliminating Crystal Palace in October 1994 when Dean Gordon’s header, scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time, forced their Coca-Cola Cup tie into extra time. Sam Ellis’s side had defended their advantage with enormous resilience at Selhurst Park, with goalkeeper Andy Leaning producing several important saves as Palace pushed for an equaliser. Once Gordon had finally levelled the aggregate score, the contest slipped away from the Imps, with Chris Armstrong and Bruce Dyer scoring during extra time to give the Premier League club a 3-0 victory on the night and a 3-1 aggregate win.

That dramatic conclusion followed one of City’s most memorable League Cup nights at Sincil Bank. Palace arrived for the first leg as firm favourites, but Lincoln matched their top-flight opponents and secured a 1-0 victory in front of 4,310 supporters. The decisive moment arrived after 61 minutes when Nigel Martyn failed to hold David Puttnam’s effort, and David Johnson converted the loose ball. Leaning then kept Palace at bay with four fine saves, while Colin Greenall and the rest of the City defence stood firm to give the Imps a precious lead to take to Selhurst Park.
