Lincoln City frustrated Premier League Birmingham City for more than an hour at St Andrew’s in the second round of the Carling Cup. Backed by almost 3,000 travelling supporters, the League Two Imps defended resolutely and carried a threat of their own, with Gareth McAuley heading narrowly wide from Nathan Peat’s free-kick. Birmingham came closest before the break when Emile Heskey headed against the underside of the bar, while Alan Marriott later denied the England striker with his legs.
The resistance was finally broken after 64 minutes when Jesper Gronkjaer collected Darren Anderton’s pass and drilled a low shot beyond Marriott for his first Birmingham goal. Substitute Clinton Morrison added a second before Robbie Savage converted a penalty following Paul Morgan’s foul on Dwight Yorke. Simon Yeo was fouled by Mario Malechiot at the end, and he ensured City replied from the spot with six minutes remaining, giving us a consolation their performance deserved in a 3-1 defeat watched by 14,500.
