Bert Linnecor
Bert Linnecor joined Lincoln City from Birmingham City in April 1957 as part of the deal that took Dick Neal in the opposite direction, beginning seven years of service in which he made almost 300 first-team appearances. Playing at wing-half and inside-forward, he helped the Imps achieve their remarkable escape from relegation in 1957/58, winning the final six matches to preserve their Second Division status. His most famous contribution came at Anfield in April 1960, when he scored all three goals in a 3-1 victory that completed a league double over Liverpool. He scored his first Division Two goals on the final day of the 56/57 season against Barnsley.
Linnecor remained with City through successive relegations to the Fourth Division before leaving for the newly formed Boston FC in the summer of 1964. In Division Three he netted seven, his first coming at Loftus Road as we beat QPR 3-1, while his first Division Four goal was on the opening day of the 62/63 season as we beat Tranmere 4-2. His association with the Imps continued when Bert Loxley brought him back in 1970 to coach the club’s young amateur players, and he later took charge of the under-19s during their first Northern Intermediate League season under Graham Taylor.
