Neville Bannister
Neville Bannister joined Lincoln City from Bolton Wanderers in 1961 as the Imps attempted to avoid relegation from the Second Division. He had progressed through Bolton’s junior teams, scoring four goals in 26 league appearances for the club. His standout moment came in the 1958 Charity Shield, when he scored and set up a goal for Nat Lofthouse in a 4-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. He was on the scoresheet just once in our Second Division season, in our 5-2 win at Middlesbrough, our last away win at the level until Bolton a couple of weeks ago, which is ironic.
The outside-right arrived with top-flight experience, but could not prevent City going down, with a second successive relegation taking the club into the Fourth Division. He scored in the Third Division as we beat Crystal Palace 3-2, also bagging a brace in the game Bert Linnecor scored a goal in against QPR. His first Fourth Division goal came as we lost to Oldham in September 1962, but he did bag a hat trick later in the season against Torquay United.
Bannister remained at Sincil Bank until 1964, scoring 16 goals in 68 Football League appearances before moving to Hartlepools United.
