Chris Cohen put concern for Rob Dickie ahead of Lincoln City’s victory at Ashton Gate after the Bristol City defender was stretchered off during the second half.
Dickie went down in the 72nd minute of our 1-0 win and required treatment before being carried off and replaced by Robert Atkinson. It was an upsetting sight on an otherwise positive evening for the Imps, and Chris began his post-match interview by sending his best wishes to the former Imps defender, before discussing the three points.
When I asked about the game, Chris replied:
“I think before all that, we saw Rob Dickie pick up what looked like a really bad injury. I’ve been there as a player. Myself, and everyone at the football club just wishes him a speedy recovery, and no one wants to see that.
“It’s miles bigger than three points, and as I said, I’ve been in that situation myself, and first and foremost, everyone at our football club, staff, players, supporters, wish him a speedy recovery.”
The full extent of the injury was not known when Michael Skubala spoke to the media shortly afterwards. Our former boss said there were concerns about both Dickie’s knee and ankle, with scans needed before the club could establish exactly what had happened.
“We’re not sure yet. Yeah, it’s a bad one,” he said.
“Knee and ankle, we think, or hopefully. So it looks like both at the minute. Yeah, we’re not sure without scanning it, but it’s not a good injury at all.”
For Michael, the concern over his defender outweighed the disappointment of losing the game. Freddie Draper’s goal had settled the contest in our favour, but the sight of a player leaving the pitch on a stretcher understandably dominated his immediate thoughts.
“That’s probably the biggest disappointment of the night when you lose a player in that way. I know we’ve lost the game, but yeah.”
Asked about what had appeared to be an innocuous incident, Michael explained that Dickie had described twisting and hearing noises. The defender was due to undergo a scan the following morning, with no confirmed diagnosis or recovery timeframe available at the time of the interview.
“He’s twisted, and he said things have turned, and heard noises, I think
“Rob Dickie doesn’t get stretchered off if he’s not in serious trouble. So we’ll see. We need to scan him in the morning and see.”
We can enjoy a hard-earned away win while recognising that some things matter far more than the result. Chris expressed that perfectly, and everyone here at The Stacey West wishes Rob well, with the hope that the scans bring better news than those worrying scenes suggested.
