Trevor Peake
Trevor Peake would have to be in the mix, although he’s another player I never saw in a Lincoln shirt. My memories are of him at Coventry, where he was excellent on the ball and formed that partnership with Brian Kilcline in the side that beat Spurs in the 1987 FA Cup final. He wasn’t the sort of giant we sometimes seem to favour at centre-half, but then neither is Tom Hamer, and there are other ways to impose yourself on a game. What I liked about Peake was that he could defend properly and play as well, which would give us something valuable when we wanted to build from the back.
There is also something about his journey that appeals to me, coming out of non-league with Nuneaton Borough and joining us in 1979, just after we’d dropped into the Fourth Division. By the time he left, we’d been knocking on the door of the Second Division, and he went on to spend eight years with Coventry before another six at Luton. I like that progression and the sense of a player who had worked his way up, rather than somebody who had always been expected to play at the top.
In terms of attitude, application and ability on the ball, I think he’d have plenty to offer this Lincoln side, even if he didn’t quite fit the physical profile of some of our other defenders.
