The Ugly: James Brown
If you’re wondering who the hell James Brown is, that’s understandable. I don’t have a picture of him (obviously).
He joined us on loan from Millwall in January 2019 as defensive cover during our title-winning season, then managed to get through the whole spell without making an appearance. He barely troubled the matchday squad either, which makes writing about his contribution to Lincoln City something of a challenge.
A Millwall academy graduate, Brown had signed his first professional contract in 2016 and gained useful experience with Carlisle, making 27 league appearances during a loan spell. Another loan at Livingston followed before he arrived at Sincil Bank, part of the same January recruitment drive that brought Lee Angol back to the club. We were putting the finishing touches to a successful squad, and Brown’s role turned out to involve watching it succeed.
He later found regular football at St Johnstone after joining during their Scottish cup double season, then had a loan at Raith Rovers before moving to Marine in 2024. He also became a Malta international through his grandfather, giving him a perfectly respectable career beyond a Lincoln chapter of no appearances and very little prospect of one.
