Sheffield Wednesday defender Ernie Weaver has been linked with a loan move to Boston United as National League clubs continue to monitor his availability.

The 20-year-old made his first League One start of the season against Cambridge United on Tuesday, producing an encouraging performance in a 1-1 draw.

Boston United Keeping Tabs On Ernie Weaver

According to The Star, Boston are among the fifth-tier sides watching the young centre-back’s situation at Hillsborough. Proposed temporary moves to Forest Green Rovers and Hornchurch have already been halted, with Weaver remaining available to help Wednesday through their defensive selection problems.

The Pilgrims’ interest therefore comes at a time when the defender is getting an opportunity with his parent club. His appearance against Cambridge took him to nine league outings, although his longer-term prospects for regular football could change as more experienced teammates return.

Weaver came through Wednesday’s academy and is currently contracted until the end of the season. He signed his first professional deal in July 2025 before making his senior debut against Bolton Wanderers in the League Cup the following month. A temporary move would offer another route to senior experience, but his involvement this week underlines why the Owls have continued to use him while other clubs assess his availability.

Matt Hamshaw Praises Sheffield Wednesday Defender

Weaver partnered Max Lowe, usually a left-back, in a makeshift central defensive pairing against Cambridge. Despite a difficult opening period against striker Louis Appéré, he finished with 15 clearances, five successful aerial duels and three blocks.

Caretaker manager Matt Hamshaw acknowledged that Wednesday missed experience at the back, particularly when Cambridge threatened on the counter. However, he also praised the way Weaver adapted as the match progressed.

Speaking to The Star, Hamshaw said:

“Look, it was a difficult game to come into. They had a big number nine, who we had to look after and I think that he didn’t probably get in positions well enough the first 20 minutes, as you probably heard me shouting from the side of the pitch. And then, as the game progressed, he grew into it a lot more.”

For Boston, the immediate position remains one of reported interest rather than a completed deal. With previous proposed switches halted and Weaver contributing at Hillsborough, his availability will depend on how Wednesday assess their defensive requirements.
