Former Lincoln City winger Mustapha Carayol has announced his retirement at 38. The Gambian international was part of the last Imps squad to suffer relegation, spending the 2010/11 campaign at Sincil Bank.

Carayol has called time on a career which took him from the lower leagues to the Championship, European football and the international stage. Announcing his decision on Instagram, he reflected on two decades in the game and outlined plans to move into football agency.

“After two decades, this chapter of my life has finally come to an end. I’ve learned so much along the way and will forever be grateful for everything football has given me.”

Two current Imps were among those paying tribute, with Tom Hamer writing “Congrats mate” and Tendayi Darikwa adding “Congrats bro” beneath the announcement. Hamer played alongside Carayol at Burton Albion, while Darikwa shared a dressing room with him at Nottingham Forest.

Carayol joined Lincoln from Torquay United in the summer of 2010, with the clubs eventually agreeing compensation of £35,000, payable in instalments, plus additional clauses. He made an immediate impression by scoring on his debut in our opening-day 2-1 defeat against Rotherham United.

Further league goals followed against Wycombe Wanderers and Hereford United, while he also scored against Hereford in the FA Cup. His only season with the Imps brought 37 appearances and four goals in all competitions, but ended with our relegation from the Football League.

He moved to Bristol Rovers in June 2011 before earning a switch to Middlesbrough the following summer. That began a lengthy association with the Championship, where he also represented Brighton and Hove Albion, Huddersfield Town, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town.

Spells abroad followed with Apollon Limassol in Cyprus and Adana Demirspor in Turkey, with his time at Apollon including Europa League football. He later returned to England with Gillingham, Burton and Exeter City, before joining Wealdstone and then Peterborough Sports.

Alongside his club career, Carayol won seven caps for Gambia and scored twice. Representing his country was a particular source of pride in his retirement message, although he admitted wishing he had taken that step sooner.

“I got to live my dream of playing for my country. I wish I’d done it earlier, but standing out there on the pitch, my family in the stands and Gambians cheering my name, is something dreams are made of.”

Carayol also thanked his teammates, staff and family, and spoke of fulfilling his ambition of playing with his son watching. He said he was grateful to leave the game healthy and happy, with his attention now turning towards helping the next generation.

“Although my playing days are over, my journey in football continues. I’ve always had passion for helping younger players, whether that’s sharing advice or experiences in the changing room. Now I’m looking forward to taking that passion into football agency, helping players navigate their careers and prepare for life beyond the game.”

His time at Sincil Bank amounted to just one season, but it was an early chapter in a career which continued for another 15 years after his departure. We wish him well as he takes his next steps in the game.
