Thanks / No Thanks: Everton

No Thanks: Gary Powell

11 games, no goals. That was the sum total of Gary Powell’s input to Lincoln City during his short loan spell at the end of 1990. He was a talented lad, he wouldn’t have come through the ranks at Everton if he wasn’t, but he arrived at a bad time for the club. We were under the watchful eye of Allan Clarke, a manager who is remembered as a belligerent man with little idea on how to put together a decent team.

After City he had spells on loan with Scunthorpe and Wigan, scoring for both, before embarking on a rather nomadic career. He did enjoy a decent spell at Wigan between 1991 and 1993, scoring 13 times.

In 2005 his goal gave Rhyl a win in the UEFA Cup 1st qualifying round, making them only the second Welsh Premier League side to win a European tie.

He was pony for us though.
