Thanks, no thanks: Wycombe Wanderers

Thanks – Graham Bressington

We’re spending a lot of time in my childhood today. Graham Bressington was another of my early heroes, a ‘never-say-die’ midfielder with a goal in him, as well as a mean streak.

He was what could perhaps be called a maverick, a man swore like a trooper, smoked and drank and yet still had enough left in the tank to impress on the pitch. He joined us midway through the GMVC season, from Wycombe, and later became an integral part of our success. He stayed with us during the early days of the Football League too, scoring what I can recall as the best goal I’d seen to date in a 3-1 defeat against Gillingham in November 1989. Or 1990. I forget the year.

He wouldn’t take losing lightly, not one bit. He fought tooth and nail every time he stepped on the pitch and fewer had a character like he did. He played in the midfield, not unlike Michael O’Connor in his industry and endeavour.

I was gutted when he moved on but, whenever things change, you have to be thankful things happened, not sad that they’ve ended.

  1. The only good thing I remember from Oakes’ time at Sincil Bank was a glorious 40 yard pass he made that led to the winning goal against Bournemouth in 2008. Was the only time that Jackson’s quote ‘His left foot can peel carrots’ seemed to be true.

  2. It was Monday, under the sign of Taurus (see birth chart on May 2, 1988). The US president was Ronald Reagan (Republican). Famous people born on this day include Alireza Haghighi and Lara Liang.
