Thanks, no thanks: Wycombe Wanderers

Opening day of the 2017 season

Perhaps an odd one to end with. After all, we didn’t win this game and it wasn’t exactly a spectacle.

Not unless you count our first match back in the Football League a spectacle, which I do.

I didn’t cry at this game. I could have done, but I was quite drunk and simply stood in the stands with a flag (the only time I’ve taken a flag away, given to me by Colin Murphy’s son before the game kicked off) and I took in the afternoon. Nestled on the edge of the Chilterns on a bright, summery day, the afternoon will live with me forever. Watching Luke lead the boys out when I’d previously witnessed opening games away at places like Southport and Woking will always be a big moment in my life.

I want to thank Wycombe for their hospitality, their excellent fan zone for the travelling support, their friendly supporters and their sensible stewarding. They didn’t have a lot to do with this, but thanks for the odd ‘pub / strip club’ combo the bus stopped at too.

I enjoyed that day for the right reasons and the 2-2 draw gave me hope that we’d be a force to be reckoned with eventually.

  1. The only good thing I remember from Oakes’ time at Sincil Bank was a glorious 40 yard pass he made that led to the winning goal against Bournemouth in 2008. Was the only time that Jackson’s quote ‘His left foot can peel carrots’ seemed to be true.

  2. It was Monday, under the sign of Taurus (see birth chart on May 2, 1988). The US president was Ronald Reagan (Republican). Famous people born on this day include Alireza Haghighi and Lara Liang.
