Lincoln City’s First £1m Player – Previous Candidates

Lee Frecklington

Obviously, I didn’t think the 34-year-old Freck would go for £1m after returning from Rotherham, but I firmly believed we’d see him fetch that sum when he emerged in his first stint at the club. My belief was built upon that wonderful start to the 2006/07 season, and him then carrying a poor Imps’ side through 2007/08 as well. Fans who didn’t see Freck in his first stint with us have really missed out because he made the game look so easy. Box to box, he could tackle, dribble and score goals for us. we turned down two bids for him from Peterborough in January 2008, with Peter Jackson claiming they weren’t right for the club.

Sadly, what was right for the club, was loaning him out after the transfer window had closed a year later. I am still baffled by that action to this day, Our home-grown talisman was gone, and in a masterstroke of managerial genius, we couldn’t bring anyone in permanently to replace him. He went on to play regularly in the Championship but I firmly believed for a spell he would end up leaving us for Leeds for £1m.

Why not head over to our forum and discuss my picks, and maybe suggest some of your own?
