Former Chelsea defender ‘just training’ with the Imps

Internet chatter recently has linked City with a move for former Chelsea man Michael Mancienne, but in his press conference today Micahel Appleton has confirmed the defender is just training with the club, for now.

Mancienne began his career at Chelsea, enjoying loan spells at QPR and Wolves before moving to Hamburg in the Bundesliga. He returned from Germany to spend time with Nottingham Forest, before recently heading over to the US to appear for New England Revolution.

Mancienne, who can play central defence and right back, is now 33 years old and has only been without a club for a few weeks, having left New England at the end of 2020. He was spotted by some at the game this weekend, and has been training with the club for a week or so now. He is the mystery MLS players mentioned on the internet a week ago, which led to this speculation article from us.

However, that is not with a view to a move just yet, as Michael told Rob Makepeace this morning. He is currently training with the Imps just to keep fit, and is Jorge Grant’s brother-in-law, which is where the link originated.

Michael didn’t rule out a move for Mancienne, who was an FA Cup winner with Chelsea in 2009, appearing once, as well as making a late outing in the Champions League against Juventus. He suggested it might be something we visit in two or three weeks, but that a move wasn’t imminent.

Mancienne is a free agent, which means clubs will be free to sign him after the transfer deadline, and MA is clearly bearing that in mind as we head into the second half of the season.

The transfer window closes on Monday, February 1st, at 11 pm. The Imps are hoping to make a couple of additions to the squad as we hunt an unlikely promotion to the Championship, but if those do not come off then having a player of Mancienne’s experience already integrated with the squad, and free to join, would be a big boost.
