January Transfer Window Hits and Misses

The January transfer window is coming around quickly, and that means new faces coming to Sincil Bank.

Some players will go, but crucially, some will come in. There’s a misconception that a player coming in means an improvement to the squad – that’s not always the case. In fact, sometimes, a chance to recruit can be a bad thing; it can disrupt a team’s flow and cohesion.

Over the past six seasons, we’ve seen plenty of activity at the Bank with players coming in, but which windows have been best? Who were the hits and misses of the recent windows?

I’ve gone through each of the windows, from January 2018 to last season, and picked a hit and a miss from each. The beauty of this is the power of hindsight because a transfer window can only really be judged a year, two or even three after it happened. I couldn’t really do 2016/17, as we were non-league and could sign players after the league window closed. I’ve also given each window a rating out of ten, based on the number of hits and misses in my eyes.

My picks from our last five Football League seasons are in chronological order.
