Imps Linked With Swoop For £250,000-Rated Defender

The Imps have been linked with a move for Tom Hamer, a defender valued at £250,000 on the Tranfermarkt website.

Pete O’Rourke, a reliable outlet for news in League One, has suggested we’re in for Hamer, who is with Burton Albion, as we look to shore up the right side of our defence. The 24-year-old has been hot property in recent seasons – Barnsley were reported to be lining up a six-figure bid for him last year, while SPFL outfit Aberdeen were also credited with interest.

Hamer has a year left on his deal with the ambitious Brewers, having penned a two-year extension last summer. He is a right-sided centre back (one box ticked) but can also play right back, which would deliver cover for Darikwa (and maybe Benn) should we need it.

Hamer came throguh the ranks at Oldham Athletic, starting 79 matches for them, including one against the Imps. His move to Burton ensured he crossed our paths a couple of times since, and he’s slowly built a reputation as one of the division’s stronger centre-backs. He’s 6ft 2in tall, and played left back, right back and centre back for Burton last season. That flexibility does seem to fit our requirement for a fluid defense that can sit equally as comfortably as a three or a flat four.

Last season for the Brewers he won 64% of his defensive duels, and 56% of his aerial duels, making him a decent defender in the air and on the floor. He feels a lot like an ‘all-rounder’ and at 24 is a good age for development.

Is this today’s signing? We’ve been teased with one capture, and usually, when O’Rourke says something is close, it is close, but he’s also said it about Fulham’s George Wickens, and yesterday from nowhere, Dom Jeffries arrived, so currently, nothing can be taken for granted where the Imps are concerned.
