Huddersfield Town are in a currently in a bad way, both on and off the field. Unfortunately for them that theme continued in to the match on Tuesday night which current interim boss for the Terriers Jon Worthington reflected on post match

Huddersfield went into the game on Tuesday night in bad form. In their previous eight games leading up to the game, they lost five of them and won just three. The defeats included a loss at home Peterborough, and away losses to Wigan and Bristol Rovers who are all side who have struggled this season and are in the bottom half of the table. During this run, they also sacked now Ex Head Coach Michael Duff due to the teams results since the turn of the new year.

Jon Worthington was the man appointed to take over from Duff who was the academy manager at that time. He shared his frustration with the result and aspects of his side’s performance in an interview with the media post-match on Tuesday evening; “Frustration. I think frustration is probably the main feeling.”

“Yes, had dominant spells at times. But, ultimately where we’re at is it’s about getting results and we’ve not been able to do that tonight.”

During the 90 minutes, Huddersfield had times where especially in an attacking sense they looked a little bit lost for ideas. Different tactics were tried like LB Ruffels would bomb forward either out wide or slightly inside from the wide area when they got the ball, as he was covered in the gap he left by veteran Hogg. Through pretty much the whole game they also tried to leave one player out on one far side of the pitch when the ball and the rest of both teams was on the other side. They did this to leave space for the player on the other side of the field and through most of the game that was winger Josh Koroma who had a difficult afternoon which included some very poor efforts on goal.

However, Koroma wasn’t the only one in that regard as Taylor, Kasumu and Marshall all produced similarly poor attempts on goal that either went way over the bar or comfortably wide. Huddersfield only managed ten attempts in the whole match, none of them were on target which produced an xG of just 0.40 and no shot produced an xG of more than 0.09.

Worthington also reflected on his team’s lack of effectiveness in the final third in his interview with the media; “Lincoln are well organised. But, we have to be better in those moments. Decision making in the final third and having those moments where we can impact it.”

Terriers’ fans are not happy with the situation their club is in currently. As I previously mentioned, they sacked their previous Head Coach earlier in March and did not replace him. The club have announced losses of around £15million in their financial reports for the 2023/24 season which was a 6.4 million increase on the previous year. There is also Chairman Kevin Nagle who splits opinion and is very vocal. He has took to social media on numerous occasions to show his disappointment when Huddersfield have lost or been on a bad run. Finally, just to top it all off, Huddersfield have announced season tickets for next season and they are 60% more expensive than the season tickets for this season. That’s a massive discrepancy which just made fans even more riled up.

The Huddersfield fans in the Stacey West stand made their voices clear during and after the game. Of course, first and foremost they were disappointed about how the game was going after City went 1-0 up and their side struggled to break down a resilient Lincoln side. During the second half, they could be heard chanting about the players and one of the clubs higher ups- Chief Sporting Director Mark Cartwright who the fans seem to have a lot of distain for. These were the chants; “Mark Cartwright, get out of our club!” and “You’re not fit to wear the shirt! (towards the players)”

The play-offs are still a possibility for Town as they are currently just two points outside the top six and still have games left yet against other play off contenders in Stockport and Wycombe. Head Coach Worthington shares that opinion as when asked if the goal for the club changes now; “Absolutely not.”
