If thereβs one area we know weβll need to address, itβs defensive midfield β assuming Ethan Erhahon departs. Jamie McDonnell, 21, spent 2024/25 on loan at Colchester United from Nottingham Forest and has the potential to be the perfect successor.
Across League Two, McDonnell ranked top among U23s for defensive duels and interceptions, and also placed second for aerial duels β a notable improvement on Erhahon. More impressively, his passing metrics were also strong, showing composure and distribution under pressure. Danny Cowley called him βChampionship ready.β Thatβs good enough for us.
Forest may want to loan him again, but if thereβs any chance of a permanent deal, we should be at the front of the queue. Our long-standing relationship with Forest β Bridcutt, Johnson, Grant, Walker β could be a factor. McDonnell ticks every box: age, profile, upside, and availability. Heβs the standout pick among all six.
