27-Year-Old Reflects On Imps Squad Flexibility

Imps winger Reeco Hackett was on Imps+ interview duty this week, pointing out the flexibility in the squad.

The 27-year-old made a brief cameo against Chelsea, but is expected to be back in the starting line-up for this weekend’s trip to Peterborough United.

Posh are currently playing a 3-5-2, having switched after a horrible start, and that leaves City with a decision to make. Is it the usual 4-2-3-1, or reverting to a back three, as against Chelsea?

Hackett admitted the squad depth means the side are able to adapt, whatever Michael Skubala decides to do.

“I think at the minute we’re in a really good place in terms of being able to adapt. We’ve got a big squad and everyone’s playing a part. I think you see it every week now when we play. The subs come on and make an impact.

“You saw it last week with Justin (Obikwu) coming off the bench and scoring, changing the game. I think we were drawing at the time. And we’ve got players that can come in and make a difference as well when called upon.

“I think we’ve got really good balance at the minute and being able to change shapes and play different systems I think is very good.”

The St Lucian international is now in his third season with the Imps, having racked up 82 appearances, 12 goals and eight assists. He arrived as a young(ish) player, but is now very much a senior pro.

“I’ve always been in dressing rooms where I’m one of the youngest ones,” said the former Charlton Athletic man. “Since I’ve come here, I’ve always been one of the senior boys. Obviously there’s boys that are older than me and played a lot more games than me, but I still feel like I’m a senior player, I still help the younger lads. I’d put myself as one of the leaders in the group.

“It’s about helping the young lads that are coming in. And whether they’re on loan or they’ve signed like Oscar (Thorn) for example, you always want to help them and help them to improve because there’s always some sort of knowledge that you can pass on to help them.

As a player who dropped out of the football league after his Charlton spell, but bounced back and has had loan spells in his career, Hackett is well-placed to offer advice to players.

Here’s hoping that this weekend, he adds to his record of a goal involvement every four matches or so, helping us down the Posh.
