Jacob Davenport

I felt a fool over this one. I genuinely felt we’d signed a solid gold prospect in Davenport, only for him to fail. He came through Manchester City’s academy and earned his senior break on loan at Burton Albion in early 2018, making 17 Championship appearances and scoring once.
A move to Blackburn Rovers followed that summer. Injuries hampered his progress, yet he still clocked up 36 first-team outings and netted a late equaliser at Brentford in December 2020.
He joined City on a short-term contract in September 2022, and I thought we’d snared a superb player. Instead, he featured three times in cup competitions, including the EFL Trophy against Doncaster Rovers, before departing in January 2023 at the end of his deal.
I sargued a lack of chances, but a short spell at Stockport County came next, suggesting it was a lack of something else. He did get a more regular run at Morecambe, where he added 29 appearances and a goal across the 2023–24 season. In June 2024 he moved to Derry City, continuing his career in the League of Ireland, and the fact that he’s back on the market probably tells you that early injury curtailed a really promising career.
