Imps Prepare For Lincoln United In Lincolnshire Senior Cup

It’s not quite brother against brother, friend against friend when the two Lincoln teams meet, but tomorrow night, as the dust settles on our game with Barnsley, United and City will meet at the Sun-Hats Villas & Resorts Stadium, kick off 7:45 pm.

The Lincolnshire Senior Cup isn’t a big one for us, and we’re likely to send a development team across the city for the game, but for those involved, it promises to be huge. Some young players will want to make a name for themselves, while for the Whites, a new era begins.

They’re welcoming Billy Heath into the dugout, and after two postponements, this will be his first game in charge. I suspect he can pick Daniel Vanderpuye and Charlie Carlisle for the game against their parent club, while out-on-loan Bola Okewoye and Charlie Parks could appear for City.

The Whites will also have two new faces available, Charlie Dunkerley and Lewis Cunningham, who have both arrived from clubs higher in the league than our neighbours.

One player looking for Lincoln City minutes is Kian Sagoo, who recently bagged a hat-trick in the PDL Shield against Stevengae. He told weareimps.com that he’s hoping the Imps’ technical ability can overcome a physically stronger Lincoln United side.

“I’m looking forward to the game I think it’s a big thing for us to know it’s going to be a physical challenge but hopefully we can be technically better than them,” he said.

“It’s all about beating them to the first and second ball as well as matching them aggressively but being in the quarter final is good as it’s another chance to win a trophy.”

Assistant professional development phase coach Fred Wright pointed to that Stevenage game, rather than the recent 1-0 defeat against Mansfield Town, as inspiration for tomorrow’s tie.

“The boys must look back at the game against Stevenage last week and take inspiration from that coming into this game, showing real character,” he said.

“I think as much as the result didn’t go our way the performance overall was much more positive than it was negative especially in possession.”

The Lincolnshire Senior Cup was the first game the Imps took part in, beating Boston Excelsior 11-0 back in October 1884. Since then, we have lifted the trophy 38 times, level with Grimsby Town. The current holders are Scunthorpe United, who beat Cleethorpes Town on penalties last time out.

Lincoln United have won it once, in 2016/17.

We’re now at the quarter-final stage, with Lincoln United having beaten Stamford AFC in the first round. This is where City enter, along with Boston United, Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United. Cleethorpes Town and Spalding United also enter at this stage.
