‘A While In The Making’ – Josh Honohan’s First Interview After Lincoln City Announcement

Josh Honohan signed for Lincoln City yesterday in a deal that is either starting at €500,000, or could rise to €500,000, depending on which side of the move you’re on.

Either way, it is a huge move for the Imps to agree, bringing in a player called up by Ireland this season, a double winner with Shamrock Rovers and a regular in their European campaign. The six-figure sum only underlines the strides the club have made in recent seasons, and the pulling power we now have.

Josh was in attendance last night as Shamrock beat Hamrum 3-1 in their final Europa Conference League game, and he gave his first interview after officially being announced as a Lincoln player. In it, he mostly spoke of his Shamrock experience, as you’d expect, but he did explain how happy he was to have sealed his Sincil Bank move.

“It’s been a while in the making, but I’m really happy,” he said on Shamrock’s official Twitter feed. “It’ll be a new challenge over there. It’s one I’m excited for, like I said.

Playing for a new team, a new club, living in a different city, but look, it’s a new challenge, and I’m really looking forward to it.”

The 24-year-old was reportedly Stoke City’s radar over the summer, and Wigan have also been credited with an interest, but it appears the Imps’ pursuit has been dogged and determined. Representatives from the club were at the FAI Cup final, to see Josh involved in a horror tackle with Harry Nevin.

There have been whispers around Sincil Bank for a couple of months that the deal was still alive, but Josh stayed put to win the league and cup double, as well as take part in their European adventure. From early January, he’ll be part of another adventure, as we attempt to secure Championship football, against all odds.

For that, we’ll need not only quality, but the right characters, and as Josh explained, it was character that took him to the Tallaght Stadium in the first place.

“Before I came up here, the manager mentioned a lot about the type of person that comes to a club like this and the type of characters.

“When you’re in with them day in, day out and you’re working with them, you pick up on the qualities that they have and I think I’ve done that since my time here.”

These may be snippets from his exit interview from Shamrock, but they provide a fascinating insight into the type of player the Imps have secured, and here at the SW, we can’t wait to see him around the EPC giving his first words as an official Lincoln City player.
