Peterborough United boss Luke Williams was effusive in his praise of Lincoln City after yesterday’s 5-2 win for the Imps.
Williams, who has also managed Notts County, Swindon Town and Swansea City, concluded that his Posh side were simply beaten by a better team, and that there was no shame in the result.
This came after the visitors took an early lead and dominated the opening 20 minutes. It took a break in play for an injury to an assistant referee to swing the game City’s way, but when it did come back around, we ut out a clinical display.
“We also need to talk about the clinical nature of Lincoln, that’s why they are doing so fantastically well. We were beaten by a better team,” Williams told the Peterborough Telegraph, after commenting on how well his side started.
“It would be crazy to say that the break had nothing to do with it. Away from home the level of concentration to make the build-ups and to score the first goal is immense and the long delay didn’t help us. We also scored the first goal in the second half and there’s no reason other than some poor play that we concede almost immediately from the restart. Had we not done that, we have a chance to trying to wrestle a point back.

The game certainly had a Christmas feel to it, not unlike the 5-3 win against Ipswich back in late 2019. Both teams wanted to win and the open nature of the encounter had you believing either could score right up until Charles Breakspear brought the game to a close.
However, just as we had pointed at the form table before the game, the deferential Williams noted that we were high up in the division and a tough opposition.
“We’ve played a team who are right at the top of the division an, at the moment, they are too much for us to cope with and there’s no shame in that. We came here against a tough opposition and with a big crowd against us and we played very well for the majority, but there’s some percentages missing and that’s why we are both in the positions we are in.”
It’s really refreshing to see a manager making statements that seem to agree with my view of the game, and I like to think Michael’s are the same when we’re beaten. It’s also nice to have a view from the outside looking in and us being too much for Peterborough, when you consider some of the maulings they have handed to us in recent years.
